Diet

Picture
Ringnecks need a variety in their diet, they can't just have seeds and pellets and be expected to stay healthy. So let's get started on getting your parrot on a healthy diet. They need a vast variety in their diet. Experiment with making them different healthy foods. Make sure you wash all fruits and vegetables (organic is the best) to get all the pesticides off which are toxic. Give them treats on occasion especially with training, mine go bananas for raisins.

Pellets

Pellets should be the main staple diet. A good healthy pellet is wise. There are a variety to choose from. Shy away from ones mixed with sunflower seeds, peanuts, etc. Those are treats and should not be in their food. Roudybush parrot food is very popular.

Some people give their birds rabbit food, no kidding. This is not wise. Please make sure you get species specific pellets. Don't get cockatiel food for a Ringneck.

Seeds

I give my parrots seeds twice a week. They need a bit of seed in their diet.

Fruits

Giving them fruits is vital to keeping them healthy. Just make sure they are not on the toxic list. They need fruits daily to keep them healthy.

Vegetables

Giving them vegetables is vital to keeping them healthy. Just make sure they are not on the toxic list. They need vegetables daily to keep them healthy.

Nuts

Peanuts (with the shell), I have read, are bad. I do not feed them peanuts, but other nuts I do and they dive bomb them, especially Chiquita. It is recommended to give parrots nuts only a few times in their weekly feeding regimen. Just as with people, the odd little treat, like peanut butter on a cracker or piece of whole meal bread is fine for parrots.
